Our Routines

As a parent for 3.5 years, the question I got asked most are "how I make my kids go to bed early", followed by grumbles how impossible for their kids to sleep early. Seriously, even the security at my building complaint her grandchildren sleeping at 12 midnight. Some of them then would jump to conclusion and sarcastically mentioning how easy my life as a mom is/ how my kids are the easy one.

My kids are in bed by 7.30 pm and usually asleep by 8 pm. I understand families with working parents come home late and prefer their kids stay up a little longer to spend some quality time; I know some parents who woke an hour early in the morning to spend time with kids and have them sleep early too, so in the end it's really all on parents' priorities and family's lifestyle.

And here come the questions:

- Why so early? K wakes early at 6.50 am on school days, maybe 7.30 am on weekends and D wakes around 8 am. K usually don't nap anymore, and D takes 1 hour nap every now and then. They sleeps early for 2 reasons - mommy need me-time and most importantly, it's healthier for children growth and development.

- Why drop the nap? So I heard and read about naps benefits, you can't put a kid fueled with energy to nap. It gets harder for K to fall asleep for nap when she turned 3, so I decided to drop it. Of course there are days she is exhausted and requested for nap but it always have to end up with at least 1.5 hours outdoor time to be able to sleep by 8 pm.

- How to sleep train efficiently?

First, have a consistent sleep routine (wash up, bed time story, chat/ singing) and always hugs and kisses with everyone in the house before going to bed.

Second, decide what time and stick with it (at least for the first 2-3 months). Most days my kids sleep early, but it doesn't mean they can never have late night out, it' just don't happen very often.

Third, if they nap or want to nap, limit the time of naps.  For example, my kids must wake from naps no later than 4.30 pm.

That's how I do it.

Tips: Hiking

Hiking with kids can be tough but we did it anyway, because it’s one of the best way to show kids the right way to care and love the nature. Of course, there are times where kids get worn out, feel bored or throw tantrums; but they develop new skills like observing plants and livings in nature, experience independence and trained physiques when they spend time outdoors.  However, heading into the nature with children requires some planning and prep;  1. Right clothing and gear. Layers of clothes so you could adjust for changing temperatures, weather and condition. Closed-goes shoes that fit well. Accessories like hat and sunglasses  2. Stock up your backpack.  Filled up with snacks for kids (something they’ll look forward to), plenty of water, sunscreen and bug repellent. Consider to let your young children like mine (4.5yo and 3yo) bring 1 of their favourite toy if it makes them feel better about the hike. And not forget the first aid kit stock with bandage, bite an...

The old school playground - Holiday Farm

Proclaim: I am not advertising for them, I am not paid to do this. This is just my review, my sharing, my experience.  Note: Mask on face at all time! Even when we are doing activities. Be safe, and don’t give a reason for these facilities to be forced to close too.  Holiday farm is a family run, educational and interactive farm situated in Sheung Shui. It promotes green culture and environmental friendly lifestyle hence being there do make you feel closer to the nature; especially with their originality on play equipments. Last holiday, we took kids to Holiday Farm. Honestly, it’s an exciting place to be, we have a wonderful day, from 10 to 5pm 👍 Kids love everything they saw! The treehouse slides, the horses riding made with recycled materials, the barrel slides, the “carpets” slides, each of these gave so much fun and create unforgettable memories.  The activities are divided into 2 categories, the generals (include botanic gardens, boat through the pond, rickshaw, gr...

Balance beam 6. “A” wall  7. Spider webs  8. Barbed wire  9. A frame  10. Log jump Kids love every bits! Well, almost every single one except the mud pit which got them in a little bit of a sticky situation. There are moments which I’d love not to forget, moments that my kids made me so proud of myself as a mother 😂  We joint the open category for age 4 to 6, which K is 6y2m and D is 4y8m. They have been quite an active kids, of course I have no doubt in their capability to finish the challenge. However, they do surprise me with their team spirits and sharpness at taking down each obstacles.  K shows her determi...
