Thousand Lake Reservoir

There’s many hiking trails in Hong Kong, but some aren’t family friendly. I have been researching for kids friendly outdoor activities and came across this trail with amazing view that I want to check in with my kids, and even better, with our friends! After further discussion and route planning with friends, we are all set to go!

Where are we going?

Reservoir Islands Viewpoint (千島湖清景台) was established in 2019 for hikers and tourists to have better view of the Thousand Islands (千島湖) also known as Tai Lam Chung Reservoir (大欖涌水塘). The reservoir has over 10 islands and hills with 4 huge dam, forming the view of “islands”.

What to pack?

With kids there are several must have items in your backpack 🎒:

✅Ice water (put a bottle or 2 in freezer the night before)

✅Plenty of water

✅Cake/bread/ snacks

✅Fan

✅Insects repellent

✅Sunscreen/ shade/ hat

How to get there?

With a bunch of mommies friends and kids buddies from different part of Hong Kong, we meet up at Yuen Long Mtr station, then took taxi (fares at approx $60-75) right up to Tai Lam Country Park Management Centre (大欖郊野公園管理站). There’s a public carpark right next to it for drivers.

It took us (6 adults with 8 kids) 2 and half hours back and forth from the entrance (management centre) to the viewpoint which includes the stairs up (approx 94m/ 70floors up). For your reference, the trail is merely a 3.3km one way hike, and our kids age group are 3.2y to 6y. Of course they are bunch of children with outdoor and hiking experiences 😉

Tips:

- Do take time to look around, for the special plants and insects, or lizards and rainbows along the way. - There are 2 stop points, the first is at a rocky fense castle like kind of bridge and the second one is at the temple with copper horse at front. When you see the horse, you know you’re half way there!

- Please take care of the environment, remember not to leave anything behind

Hiking : Tsuen Wan to Sha Tin

Even though we enjoying having friends around, we always make times for just the four of us. And we love hiking as a family. It is a bonding experience and allow us to exercise together. Hiking motivates kids to be active and teaches them to appreciate the nature. Family hike is usually on a Sunday. We started at Tsuen Wan’s Shing Mun Country Park. Once arrived at the starting point, turn right and continue walking on paved road (watch out for cars), it’s anti-clockwise along the reservoir. Walk along Wilson-trail sec 7, the reservoir is on your left, until you reach a T point where your left is a bridge. Take the stairs on your right towards the paved road, then turn left to continue walking. You will be crossing a bridge, and it marks the beginning of a more challenging hike. From the bridge, it’s mostly slopes, all the way towards the other hills to Shatin. After the first slope at a junction, there the only cubicle toilets. I suggest to take a break. High Island Reservoir East Dam (萬宜水庫東壩)

A couple of months ago, I planned on an easy scenery walk with kids and their friends. We left home right after school, only managed to grab a bite on the way to Sai Kung. There are plenty of hiking trails waiting for us in Sai Kung but this time, we go for the easiest route, just a short visit to the East Dam. It’s a reservoir formed in 1978, known for the volcanic rock columns and anchor shape sea barrier(錨形防波提), a breakwater. There’s public toilets right at the entrance to High Land Reservoir East Dam, along there’s information on volcanic rocks and pavilion. It’s concrete or asphalt pavements all the way down to the sea cave which is proof of coastal erosion (海蝕洞). On your way down to the breakwater, there’s a gigantic wall of volcanic rocks, which is the hexagonal rocks columns! Its a 140 millions year old volcanic history. MLP Friendship Carnival

I received many message from friends in March on news and information regarding Hong Kong first My Little Pony Friendship Carnival at AIA Vitality Park. Friends sending to me knowing K is a big fan of the ponies for over a year now. To avoid the crowd, we made arrangements to go after school on 29th, with 2 of her "after school play buddies". Obviously K and Tong are the little fans of MLP, both adores Twilight Sparkle (the purple one) most. Him wasn't interested in ponies but had fun with the activities. Entrance fees comes with $20 to be spent at the game booths. 7 free activities to collect stickers for prize drawing. The only charging activities (beside food and drinks booths) are face painting and specially printed photo with characters. Anyway, the ponies are coming out on stage to take pictures with kids and adults, I really don't see necessity to pay for it 🤭 K and her friends enjoyed the carnival.
