Thousand Lake Reservoir

There’s many hiking trails in Hong Kong, but some aren’t family friendly. I have been researching for kids friendly outdoor activities and came across this trail with amazing view that I want to check in with my kids, and even better, with our friends! After further discussion and route planning with friends, we are all set to go!

Where are we going?

Reservoir Islands Viewpoint (千島湖清景台) was established  in 2019 for hikers and tourists to have better view of the Thousand Islands (千島湖) also known as Tai Lam Chung Reservoir (大欖涌水塘). The reservoir has over 10 islands and hills with 4 huge dam, forming the view of “islands”.

What to pack?

With kids there are several must have items in your backpack 🎒:

✅Ice water (put a bottle or 2 in freezer the night before)

✅Plenty of water

✅Cake/bread/ snacks

✅Fan

✅Insects repellent

✅Sunscreen/ shade/ hat

How to get there?

With a bunch of mommies friends and kids buddies from different part of Hong Kong, we meet up at Yuen Long Mtr station, then took taxi (fares at approx $60-75) right up to Tai Lam Country Park Management Centre (大欖郊野公園管理站). There’s a public carpark right next to it for drivers.

It took us (6 adults with 8 kids) 2 and half hours back and forth from the entrance (management centre) to the viewpoint which includes the stairs up (approx 94m/ 70floors up). For your reference, the trail is merely a 3.3km one way hike, and our kids age group are 3.2y to 6y. Of course they are bunch of children with outdoor and hiking experiences 😉

Tips:

- Do take time to look around, for the special plants and insects, or lizards and rainbows along the way.  - There are 2 stop points, the first is at a rocky fense castle like kind of bridge and the second one is at the temple with copper horse at front. When you see the horse, you know you’re half way there!

- Please take care of the environment, remember not to leave anything behind

Tips: Hiking

Hiking with kids can be tough but we did it anyway, because it’s one of the best way to show kids the right way to care and love the nature. Of course, there are times where kids get worn out, feel bored or throw tantrums; but they develop new skills like observing plants and livings in nature, experience independence and trained physiques when they spend time outdoors.  However, heading into the nature with children requires some planning and prep;  1. Right clothing and gear. Layers of clothes so you could adjust for changing temperatures, weather and condition. Closed-goes shoes that fit well. Accessories like hat and sunglasses  2. Stock up your backpack.  Filled up with snacks for kids (something they’ll look forward to), plenty of water, sunscreen and bug repellent. Consider to let your young children like mine (4.5yo and 3yo) bring 1 of their favourite toy if it makes them feel better about the hike. And not forget the first aid kit stock with bandage, bite an...

The old school playground - Holiday Farm

Proclaim: I am not advertising for them, I am not paid to do this. This is just my review, my sharing, my experience.  Note: Mask on face at all time! Even when we are doing activities. Be safe, and don’t give a reason for these facilities to be forced to close too.  Holiday farm is a family run, educational and interactive farm situated in Sheung Shui. It promotes green culture and environmental friendly lifestyle hence being there do make you feel closer to the nature; especially with their originality on play equipments. Last holiday, we took kids to Holiday Farm. Honestly, it’s an exciting place to be, we have a wonderful day, from 10 to 5pm 👍 Kids love everything they saw! The treehouse slides, the horses riding made with recycled materials, the barrel slides, the “carpets” slides, each of these gave so much fun and create unforgettable memories.  The activities are divided into 2 categories, the generals (include botanic gardens, boat through the pond, rickshaw, gr...

Spartan Kids ! Aroo Aroo Aroo !

This year’s Spartan Kids race is over. There were one held in May, which ended terribly (refer to : https://fb.watch/9w7o6FVlPu/) . Then, another make up race was organised last Sunday, on 21st November. Now this is more like it !  There are 10 obstacles:  1. Over under through  2. Spartan sea 3. Muddy pit  4. Slip wall  5. Balance beam 6. “A” wall  7. Spider webs  8. Barbed wire  9. A frame  10. Log jump Kids love every bits! Well, almost every single one except the mud pit which got them in a little bit of a sticky situation. There are moments which I’d love not to forget, moments that my kids made me so proud of myself as a mother 😂  We joint the open category for age 4 to 6, which K is 6y2m and D is 4y8m. They have been quite an active kids, of course I have no doubt in their capability to finish the challenge. However, they do surprise me with their team spirits and sharpness at taking down each obstacles.  K shows her determi...
