Fresh picking fruits and vegetables at the local farms

It’s the season (normally it’s winter to early spring) for strawberries picking ! There are several places where kids can pick strawberries, some which I’ve heard are either few strawberries or still too green to be picked. We’ve been to Kam Tin Country Club for strawberries picking, few years back, and I remember they have good variety from Japanese and Korean. Hence, I called early in the morning, making sure the farm are opened and on our way after kids had lunch.

Prior pandemic, aside from the farming activities, Kam Tin Country Club offers barbecue, bumper cars, animal rides, electric vehicles, bouncy castles, a big field for kids to run and kites. It sadden us to see everything else are closed, rusty and dusty. Only the feedings (fishes, rabbits, pig and tortoises) are available, and even that, it is not in a pleasant condition. It’s totally different from before the virus.

Walk passed the feeding and barbecue area, you’ll see a stone sign 「有機大王農莊」basically means “King of the Organics’ Farm”. At the counter, pick your own empty baskets, which include a plastic box and a pair of scissors. Then, off you go to the strawberries farm and pick your favourites. Bear in mind that you are not allow to eat and pick at the same time, there’s fine of $100 or more if you got caught, not much but just don’t be an idiot 🙏 also, have a little courtesy to take what you pick. There are parents who allowed their kids to pull/ pick/ cut all they want, then only choose the good / pretty ones to take away, leaving the unwanted to be rotten.

Besides the strawberries
🍓 , there are veggies (cabbage/ lettuce/ radishes/ carrots), sweet potatoes 🍠 and sweet corn 🌽 . It’s K and D first time seeing the sweet potatoes land, interested in digging the potatoes that’s under ground; and their first time plucking the sweet corn right off the plant by themselves. The sweet potatoes digging ain’t easy for kids their age (5y2m and 3y8m), mostly because they are being super gentle, and we don’t want to dig more than we need. Again, you pay for what you dig out of the ground. I’ve spoken to the farmer, it ain’t easy for them when people tend to just dig for fun, and only pay a few to take home.

Lastly, which are most important, the price. Everything are charge by the weights. Strawberries are $100-120/lbs; veggies and sweet potatoes are $24-26/lbs and sweet corn is $30/pc . It’s all listed, written on board. If you can’t see them, please ask.

How to get there:

Take West Rail line of MTR to Kam Sheung Road, take exit D.

There are parking lots with mini buses and taxi stand. If you are going by mini bus, hop on to bus 🚌 601. Or by taxi 🚕 for less than $25.

Entrance fee: No. but every attraction or ride have separate fees.

Tips: Hiking

Hiking with kids can be tough but we did it anyway, because it’s one of the best way to show kids the right way to care and love the nature. Of course, there are times where kids get worn out, feel bored or throw tantrums; but they develop new skills like observing plants and livings in nature, experience independence and trained physiques when they spend time outdoors.  However, heading into the nature with children requires some planning and prep;  1. Right clothing and gear. Layers of clothes so you could adjust for changing temperatures, weather and condition. Closed-goes shoes that fit well. Accessories like hat and sunglasses  2. Stock up your backpack.  Filled up with snacks for kids (something they’ll look forward to), plenty of water, sunscreen and bug repellent. Consider to let your young children like mine (4.5yo and 3yo) bring 1 of their favourite toy if it makes them feel better about the hike. And not forget the first aid kit stock with bandage, bite an...

The old school playground - Holiday Farm

Proclaim: I am not advertising for them, I am not paid to do this. This is just my review, my sharing, my experience.  Note: Mask on face at all time! Even when we are doing activities. Be safe, and don’t give a reason for these facilities to be forced to close too.  Holiday farm is a family run, educational and interactive farm situated in Sheung Shui. It promotes green culture and environmental friendly lifestyle hence being there do make you feel closer to the nature; especially with their originality on play equipments. Last holiday, we took kids to Holiday Farm. Honestly, it’s an exciting place to be, we have a wonderful day, from 10 to 5pm 👍 Kids love everything they saw! The treehouse slides, the horses riding made with recycled materials, the barrel slides, the “carpets” slides, each of these gave so much fun and create unforgettable memories.  The activities are divided into 2 categories, the generals (include botanic gardens, boat through the pond, rickshaw, gr...

Spartan Kids ! Aroo Aroo Aroo !

This year’s Spartan Kids race is over. There were one held in May, which ended terribly (refer to : https://fb.watch/9w7o6FVlPu/) . Then, another make up race was organised last Sunday, on 21st November. Now this is more like it !  There are 10 obstacles:  1. Over under through  2. Spartan sea 3. Muddy pit  4. Slip wall  5. Balance beam 6. “A” wall  7. Spider webs  8. Barbed wire  9. A frame  10. Log jump Kids love every bits! Well, almost every single one except the mud pit which got them in a little bit of a sticky situation. There are moments which I’d love not to forget, moments that my kids made me so proud of myself as a mother 😂  We joint the open category for age 4 to 6, which K is 6y2m and D is 4y8m. They have been quite an active kids, of course I have no doubt in their capability to finish the challenge. However, they do surprise me with their team spirits and sharpness at taking down each obstacles.  K shows her determi...
